Canada’s Damian Warner has won the Olympic gold in the decathlon after polishing off his competition through the 10 events, ending with the 1,500-metre race. Javelin, discus throw, 110-metre hurdles and the high jump are among the other events Warner had to face to get to the top of the podium, as he set records in several sports along the way. Pierce LePage, another Canadian, came in fifth.

With Warner’s gold medal, Canada has seen its best gold medal haul – currently at five – at a summer Olympics since the 1992 Games in Barcelona when it won seven. It took home four gold medals in Rio.

It was the latest win for Canada on Thursday, with Laurence Vincent-Lapointe taking the silver medal in the first-ever Olympic women’s 200-metre canoe sprint. Lauriane Genest also won bronze in the keirin cycling, the first time Canada has medalled in the event.

Now the country will aim for gold on Friday with its women’s soccer team to face off against Sweden at a new time after a push by both teams to move the event due to concerns over intense heat. Crystal Goomansingh has the latest updates from the Olympics.
